Larry D. Lewis "La Machine"

If ever a Major Taylor Iron Rider represented our name, it would be Larry D. Lewis.

Larry is simply an amazing athlete! He has ran 34 NYC Marathons. Over the last 27 years, he has also taken part in over 80 triathlons all around the country, including the Lake Placid Ironman triathlons. Larry's discipline to his training routine is legendary. Most of our club members wish that we had a fraction of Larry's fitness.

In all of his outward discipline to training, on the inside, Larry is one of the nicest people that you ever want to meet. He has the calmest demeanor, soft spoken and is a sheet pleasure to converse with.

On the road Larry is like the Terminator. You can ride away from him at your top speed, but if the ride is long enough, you are going to get tired. And when you do, don't look back because you will see him coming,  soon to overtake you. He will look as fresh a daisy and will wish you a fond farewell, as he passes you by. He specializes in long endurance rides.

Everyone has a Larry D. Lewis story. Mine, was the ride that he and I took to the Apple Orchard in 90 plus degree temperatures. When we arrived back in Brooklyn, we had 97 miles. I was literally and figuratively dead on the bike and had just enough energy to make it home. Larry urged me to ride pass my house up to Prospect Park where we would do one lap to reach a hundred miles for the day. Needless to say, I passed out on my sofa after that ride only to discover that Larry had gone home, put on his sneakers and went out for a run. It was right there that I realized that I was dealing with a half man, half machine. He exemplifies what it means to be an “Iron Rider”.

For the last twenty years Larry has lead a Father's day ride in Prospect Park. He calls it the Larry D. Lewis Invitational. It comprises of doing 33 laps in the park to reach 100 miles. It has no definitive structure. There are no organization fees. It is just a bunch of park riders jumping in trying to do as many laps as possible. Very few riders complete the ride. It is no easy feat, when you realize that there are no rest stops, yet Larry finishes it every year. “La Machine”

Larry represents the best that our club has to offer. When you ask what makes our club special, it's club members like Larry D. Lewis.
